Tanzania Mourns as President Samia Suluhu’s Husband Hafidh Ameir Hassan

Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who died on Monday, September 7, 2026, while receiving treatment in Zanzibar.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who became Tanzania’s First Gentleman when his wife assumed the presidency in March 2021, died at approximately 8:00 a.m. at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition.

The announcement was made by Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi, who expressed condolences to President Samia, her family, relatives, friends and the people of Tanzania.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan Dies in Zanzibar

According to reports from the Associated Press and other major news organisations, Hafidh died while undergoing treatment for a heart-related condition in Zanzibar. Funeral arrangements were already underway, with the family expected to lay him to rest in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.

His death marks the loss of a figure who, despite being married to one of Tanzania's most prominent political leaders, largely maintained a private life away from the political spotlight.

Hafidh was a retired agricultural officer and academic from Zanzibar. His public prominence increased significantly after his wife became Tanzania's first female president in 2021, making him the country's first First Gentleman.

A Private Husband Behind Tanzania's First Female President

Hafidh Ameir married Samia Suluhu in 1978. The couple had four children—three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, later entered public life and became involved in Tanzanian politics.

Although President Samia became one of East Africa's most influential political figures, Hafidh generally remained outside the centre of political affairs.

His role as First Gentleman was consequently characterised more by his position beside the President than by active participation in government.

His wife became Tanzania's president in March 2021 following the death of President John Pombe Magufuli. Her assumption of office made her Tanzania's first female president and brought unprecedented public attention to the couple's family life.

Regional Leaders Mourn

News of Hafidh's death has triggered messages of condolence from leaders across East Africa and the wider African continent.

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his condolences to President Samia, describing Hafidh as her lifelong companion, a beloved father to their children and a distinguished son of Tanzania.

Ruto said Kenya stood with Tanzania during the period of mourning.

The African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, also conveyed his condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania.

The African Union said Youssouf wished the family strength, courage and solace during the difficult period and prayed for the peaceful repose of Hafidh's soul.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema was also among African leaders who expressed sympathy following the announcement.
